Scientists have announced a breakthrough in the development of a male contraceptive that ‘freezes’ sperm for an hour.
The idea of a male pill has been a dream for many years, especially for women who get pimples, blood clots, or depression from the pill. Successive trials of male contraceptives have failed despite results showing they were effective in preventing pregnancy.
This is due to the fact that the drugs would have too many ‘unacceptable’ side effects – an undeniable slap in the face for anyone forced to accept the physical and emotional toll of many of today’s contraceptive methods. But this could all change.
No hormones
So far, tests have only been done on mice, but they were encouraging enough to suggest that an effective reversible oral contraceptive for men could hit the market in the next few years. Unlike the female contraceptive pill, this new drug does not contain any hormones, meaning it does not affect testosterone and has no hormone-related side effects.
Instead, the pill targets the “sperm swim” switch, shutting down sperm for a few hours. The study showed that the medication is 100% effective up to an hour after taking it. After three hours, the effectiveness of the pill drops to 91 percent, and after 24 hours the pill seems to have completely worn off. Is a new sexual revolution just around the corner?
