Maldives Demands Explanation from India Over Coast Guard Trespasses in EEZ

Malé: The Maldivian government has sought an official explanation on allegations that the Indian Coast Guard entered three Maldivian fishing boats that were fishing in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Maldives. Muhammad Muisu’s government sought an explanation from India amid the India-Maldives diplomatic dispute. Meanwhile, the Indian government has not yet officially responded to the allegation.

It is alleged that on January 31, the Indian Coast Guard trespassed on the boats that were fishing within their limits. The Indian Coast Guard boarded the boats and conducted the inspection without seeking permission from the concerned authorities. The Maldivian government has pointed out that this is a violation of international maritime law.

President Muizu also demanded the withdrawal of Indian troops from Maldives before March 15. Ever since Muisu came to power, there have been demands to reduce the Indian military presence in the Maldives. But no time limit was given. Indian Army is in Maldives for maritime security and disaster relief. It is also concluded that Muisu allowed the Chinese spy ship to anchor off the coast of Maldives, which had set out in the name of research, to provoke India.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, there was controversy when three members of the Maldives’ Muhammad Muisu cabinet made abusive remarks. Maldivian ministers have made defamatory remarks against Narendra Modi amid moves to get closer to China. Muizu had signed 20 important agreements during his visit to China. In addition to the signing of agreements, as part of strengthening strategic cooperation, an agreement was reached to strengthen bilateral relations, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.
