Fresh autumn flowers have been planted in front of the entrance. Behind the glass of the door, a board in barely legible writing advertises the cordon bleu with fries for eight euros. The “Closed” sign is more clearly visible next to it. The bistro in the old “Filmbühne” has not seen any guests since the beginning of October. The display case at the side entrance, which leads to the two cinemas, has been abandoned for a long time.
Owner announced reopening
After Thomas Braasch acquired the building three years ago and parted ways with the cinema operators, he always raised the hope that films would be shown on the screen again. Most recently, in April, the owner of the building announced that the cinema would reopen in the fall – with projection technology in the form of a high-performance laser projector.

But now the surprising turnaround: Malchin’s cinema building will be auctioned off – on November 30th in Rostock. The minimum bid is 468,000 euros, as Norddeutscheimmobilienauktion AG announced on Thursday. What happened?
Illness slows you down
“I have no choice but to sell everything. We will sell all of our properties,” Thomas Braasch told Nordkurier. The reason is his cancer. “It just doesn’t work anymore. There’s nothing you can do about it.” With his “Kiek in” – as he called his property – he was in the black. In fact, the bistro on the ground floor that served lunch was quite popular in Malchin.
The cinema building is now being auctioned off for a very low price, much less than he invested in it, says Braasch. He is sure that if he had continued, all of his plans would have worked. “It would be very nice if someone could be found to carry this all forward. I don’t have the strength for it anymore,” says the 65-year-old.
“Immediate commissioning possible”
The auction catalog lists all the renovation measures that have cost Thomas Braasch a lot of money over the past three years. He replaced the cinema seats, installed a stage and set up a club cinema in one of the halls. He turned the former “Filmriss” restaurant into a lounge where clubs also met. On the ground floor, the bistro with two kitchens invited people to have lunch. “Other areas are suitable for the expansion of holiday apartments or other projects,” the catalog continues. And: “The new, complete inventory remains in the property and enables immediate commissioning.”
Annual income of 180,000 euros is forecast. But for this to happen, Malchin’s former “film stage” would not only have to find a new owner, but also an operator for the restaurant and cinema. However, it is rather questionable whether anyone would ever take on the adventure of running a cinema in a small town like Malchin.
