After a 16-year wait, the Malaysian national football team is seeking to surpass the group stage of the Asian Nations Cup, in its fourth appearance in the continental competition, which Qatar will host next month.
The tournament will be held from January 12 to February 10, in 9 stadiums, including 7 that hosted the 2022 World Cup matches.
The 2024 Asian Cup draw placed the Malaysian team in Group E, alongside South Korea, Jordan and Bahrain.
The Malaysian national team ranked 130th in the FIFA rankings for the month of November 2023, and its best position in the international rankings was 74th in August 1993.
Establishment
The Malaysian Football Association was founded in 1933, joined the International and African Football Confederations in 1955, and was among the founders of the ASEAN Federation in 1984.
He played his first international match on April 13, 1963, under the name “Malaya” against South Korea, which he lost 2-3.
He has participated in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers since 1974 AD and has not succeeded in qualifying for the finals not once in his history.

- 1976 version in Iran: He played in the first group alongside Kuwait and China and was eliminated from the tournament in the first round after losing to Kuwait by 2-0 and drawing 1-1 with China.
- 1980 edition in Kuwait: He competed in the second group alongside South Korea, Kuwait, the Emirates, and Qatar. He was eliminated in the first round, but achieved his first victory in the tournament over the Emirates, while he tied with South Korea and Qatar, and lost to Kuwait.
- 2007 edition in Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand: It is considered the worst version of the Malaysian national team, as it suffered 3 consecutive defeats, against China, Uzbekistan and Iran, and was eliminated from the competitions.

Team coach
South Korean coach Kim Ban-gun was appointed coach of the Malaysian national team on January 21, 2022, succeeding former coach Tan Cheng, with a contract until 2023, and after the team qualified for the 2023 edition of the continental championship, the federation extended Kim’s contract to 2025.
Kim Pan-Gun is a former player who moved between Korean teams, before becoming a professional coach and supervising local teams and the Hong Kong national team for two periods before moving to head the coaching staff of the Malaysian national team.
