Malaysia’s Covid-19 Cases Record Again, This Is What Happened

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Malaysia again reports a daily increase in Covid-19 cases. As of Sunday (1/8/2021), the number of corona cases in neighboring countries was 17,150.

It was the fourth-highest daily case in the country to date. “This brings the national (total) corona count to 1,130,422,” said Malaysia’s Director General of Health Noor Hisham Abdullah, quoted by Antara. Channel News Asia (CNA), Monday (2/8/2021).

Selangor is still the state with the most cases, more than 6,000 infections. Then Kuala Lumpur 2,086 and Kedah 1,511.

Malaysia recorded 160 new deaths due to Covid-19 yesterday. This brings the country’s total death toll to 9,184.

Previously, the highest record was reported on Saturday (31/7/2021). Malaysia recorded 17,786 daily cases.

Some analysts consider that the high number of Covid cases is caused by the response to handling the outbreak that is not good and responsive. Even though it’s already lockdown many times, political dynamics have become a scourge for handling the pandemic.

“Malaysia’s response has been hampered by chaotic governance and persistent political infighting,” said Joshua Kurlantzick, Southeast Asia researcher at the think tank. Council on Foreign Relations.

Malaysia itself is indeed in a sharp internal political conflict. Many criticized and asked the Prime Minister (PM) Muhyiddin Yassin to step down due to his maneuver that called for a national emergency and restrictions on public movement unilaterally.

In fact, this step makes the current coalition of supporting parties dwindle. Finally, controversy also arose when one of the ministers said the emergency status would be lifted even though the King of Malaysia said there had been no discussion about it.

Meanwhile, over the weekend protesters gathered in central Kuala Lumpur expressing discontent with the government’s handling of the pandemic. It even called for Prime Minister Muhyiddin to step down.

They carried black flags and carried “Failed Kingdom” posters. It became a popular hashtag in Malaysia as lockdown carried out and the increase in Covid-19 cases.

This is the first physical demonstration of citizens in Malaysia. Previously, many were reluctant to take to the streets due to virus restrictions and fear of Covid-19 infection.

Malaysia implemented a state of emergency from January to August 1. Lockdown through the movement control rules (MCO) have also been implemented nationally since early July.
