Malaysian football legend, Wan Jamak Wan Hassan, asked Malaysian players to have careers abroad to follow in the footsteps of a number of players from Malaysia Indonesian National team and Thailand.
Wan Jamak considers that the quality of the Malaysian national team has not developed because only a few players have careers abroad, especially in Europe and Asian countries with good competition such as South Korea or Japan.
“We have players who are too comfortable playing in Malaysia. This condition must change, because we have seen players from other countries in Southeast Asia able to improve their performances because they play abroad,” said Wan Jamak quoted from New Straits Times.
Of the 24 Malaysian national team players that Tan Cheng Hoe brought to the 2020 AFF Cup, there were only two players who played in Europe, Luqman Hakim Shamsudin and Dion Cools. Both play in Belgium, but only Dion Cools is a starter subscription. Even then, Cools has had a career in Europe since 2013 because of his Belgian-Malaysian blood.
The rest of Malaysia has players who have careers in the Thai League, namely Dominic Tan (Police Tero) and Junior Eldstal (Chonburi).
Meanwhile, Indonesia has a number of players who have become mainstays at foreign clubs, such as Egy Maulana Vikri (FK Senica), Witan Sulaeman (Lechia Gdansk), and Asnawi Mangkualam (Ansan Greeners). In addition, Indonesia also has Elkan Baggott who plays for Ipswich Town and Syahrian Abimanyu who plays in Johor Darul Ta’zim.
While Thailand has a number of players who have experience playing in foreign clubs, such as Thanawat Suengchitthawon, Chanathip Songkrasin, Theerathon Bunmathan, and Teerasil Dangda.
“Playing abroad will make you better as a player, because the confidence of players will change. I see in terms of talent, all players in this region have the same ability, but the difference is how the player takes his abilities to the next level,” he said. Wan Plural.
“If players play abroad, they will learn many new things, which will improve their individual abilities and that will be an important key when playing with the national team,” said the former Malaysia coach.
