Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Malaysian National Team lost dramatically 0-1 to Bahrain in the second match of Group E of the 2023 Asian Cup at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, Saturday (20/1).
Bahrain absolutely controlled the game and also dominated the attacks. But Bahrain’s attacks pose little threat to Malaysia.
Malaysia, who continued to be pressured by Bahrain, defended quite deeply, while hoping to mount a quick counterattack.
However, Malaysia’s counterattacks are often effective and pose a threat to Bahrain. In the 15th minute, Faisal Halim became the creator of Malaysia’s counterattack.
After outwitting one opposing player, Faisal passed the ball to striker Paulo Josue. Unfortunately, Josue failed to take advantage of that moment and the ball was caught by the Bahrain defense.
However, the thrown ball was not perfect and was controlled by Arif Aiman. Arif Aiman’s shot in the 16th minute was blocked by goalkeeper Ebrahim Lutfallah.
In the 27th minute Matthew Davies fired a long ball towards the Bahrain goal, but the ball flew narrowly over the bar.
In the 30th minute Komail Al Aswad was brought down by Matthew Davies in the penalty box, but referee Ahmed Al Kaf did not consider the incident a penalty violation for Bahrain.
Substitute striker Abdulla Yusuf Helal almost scored a goal in the 56th minute. However, Helal’s header, which took advantage of a cross from the right side, went narrowly on the left side of the Malaysian goal.
Bahrain, who controlled the game and dominated the attack, had problems in the final pass. Neither crosses from both sides nor breakthrough passes from Bahrain’s midfield were accurate or mature passes.
In the 73rd minute, Mohamed Adel released a mature cross from the right side, which Mahdi Al Humaidan aimed for. However, Al Humaidan wasted the goal opportunity after his right foot failed to hit the ball.
The Bahrain vs Malaysia match is actually monotonous and boring. Malaysia had difficulty penetrating the opponent’s defense, while Bahrain could not create good opportunities.
Malaysia, which has an advantage in speed, also loses the ball too easily. The late transition from defense to attack hampered counterattacks.
Matthew Davies fired a right-footed volley from close range in the 89th minute, but the ball did not go into the Bahrain goal.
In the minute of injury time, Bahrain had a golden opportunity to score a goal after Ali Hasan Isa received a breakthrough pass. However, Isa’s left-footed shot was thwarted by goalkeeper Syihan Hazmi.
When the match seemed like it would end in a draw, disaster struck for Malaysia in the 90+5 minute. Harimau Malaya conceded in the final seconds of the match.
Utilizing a corner kick scheme, the ball which the Malaysian defense failed to dispose of fell to Ali Madan’s feet. From the front of the penalty box, Madan fired a right-footed shot which sent the ball across the field towards the bottom left corner of the goal without goalkeeper Syihan being able to reach it.
Bahrain won 1-0 over Malaysia.
