Malaysian Government Angry, Many Citizens Play TikTok During Flood Disaster

The government asks its citizens not to turn the flood situation into a festival for TikTok content.

“The water level in flood-affected areas has increased sharply. Especially around rivers, beaches, mining and lakes,” said Head of Zone 4 of the Johor Fire and Rescue Department, Rasidi Md Yunos as reported by Warta Ekonomi-Network Suara.com, Wednesday ( 5/1/2022).

“Some people make this situation a party, without guilt making TikTok video content on social media. In fact, this activity is very risky, because it ignores the safety aspect. They don’t wear personal protective equipment and safety jackets. They let their children play in the water. This kind of thing should not happen. It is very dangerous,” said Rasidi.

He also advised residents in flood-affected areas not to take risks. Given the depth of the water and the strength of currents during a flood, it is unpredictable, and can be life threatening.

“People need to be vigilant and respect life. Because, we do not know what is below and how deep the flood is. Can be 1 meter, can also be more than 10 meters. Therefore, I ask the public to cooperate and obey orders from the authorities, to prevent things that are not desirable, “said Rasidi.

“Still need to be vigilant, even though residents are used to the flood situation,” he added.

More than 5,000 residents in Johor have been displaced by the floods, amid occasional rains in the state. Segamat district, the area worst affected by the floods, reported more than 4,000 flood victims.

In its update on Tuesday (4/1/2021), the Department of Irrigation and Drainage mentioned that five rivers – four of which are in Segamat – fall into the dangerous category.

Around 101 villages and houses in Johor were also flooded. Currently, 79 relief centers have been opened to accommodate 5,598 flood victims.
