Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Coach Malaysian national team Kim Pan Gon was surprised that the Harimau Malaya team could lose 0-4 to Jordan in the match 2023 Asian Cup di Stadium Al Janoub, Senin (15/1).
“All the players experienced difficult moments. We did not expect this result. My players are very disappointed. We have never performed like today in the last two years,” said Kim Pan Gon as quoted by New Straits Times.
The 0-4 result was Malaysia’s defeat under the guidance of Kim Pan Gon, who started as coach of the Harimau Malaya team in January 2022. The previous biggest defeat occurred in the 2022 AFF Cup when they lost 0-3 to Vietnam and Thailand.
Malaysia’s style of play when defeated by Jordan was in the spotlight. The reason is, Kim Pan Gon dared to implement a fairly high attack and defense strategy.
“I tried to take an attacking approach in tonight’s match, but Jordan was too strong. During the first half break, I told the players that they had 45 minutes to start from the start and give their best,” said Kim Pan Gon.
“I think everyone is disappointed, but we can’t give up. We have to motivate each other because there are still two tough matches. But I think we played better in the second half after making a number of changes,” said the coach from South Korea.
Next, the Malaysian national team will face Bahrain at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, Al Rayyan, Saturday (20/1). Malaysia must win this match if they don’t want to be eliminated from the 2023 Asian Cup.
Kim Pan Gon admitted that he had prepared the Malaysian national team optimally for the 2023 Asian Cup. The 54-year-old coach hopes that Malaysia can play better against Bahrain.
“I have analyzed Jordan, Bahrain and South Korea and believe this will be a tough match, because they have a number of European players. I think this is a good experience. We have to recover from this defeat and prepare for the next match,” said Kim Pan Gon.
