Malaysia Warms Up, Mahathir Mohamad – Anwar Ibrahim Asks Prime Minister To Step Down

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Political conditions in Malaysia heats up. Malaysian opposition leaders including Anwar Ibrahim and Dr Mahathir Mohamad gathered at Merdeka Square on Monday, August 2, 2021 after being blocked from entering the parliament building by the authorities.

As for the Fighting Party, the party Mahathir Mohamad |, said in a statement that the government had violated the principles of parliamentary democracy and ridiculed the king’s decision. The Fighting Party called on the prime minister and cabinet to take an honorable path and immediately step down from their posts.

“The continuing political crisis can only end in this way and full attention can be paid to efforts to solve the health, economic and social crisis plaguing the country,” the statement said.

Opposition lawmakers held banners calling for Muhyiddin Yassin and his cabinet to resign. They tried to march from Merdeka Square to parliament but were blocked by the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU). The FRU is usually activated to deal with riots. The group then dispersed peacefully.

On Saturday, the DPR Secretary said Monday’s parliamentary meeting would be postponed as COVID-19 cases were detected in parliament.

Opposition parties called on Muhyiddin Yassin to resign this week after the King of Malaysia, Yang Dipertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah, issued a reprimand. The king complained that the government repealed the Covid-19 National Emergency Law, which had been in effect since January without the king’s approval.

The king had asked for the lifting of the national emergency over the handling of the pandemic to be debated in parliament, but the government of Muhyiddin Yassin said it was not necessary.
