Malaysia National Team Loss in AFF Cup, 4 Players Positive for Covid

Squad Malaysian national team falling in AFF Cup 2020 (2021) after two of his players tested positive for Covid-19. A total of four Malaysian players tested positive for Covid in this AFF Cup.

Two Malaysian national team players Akhyar Rashid and Quentin Cheng tested positive for Covid-19 after undergoing swab tests, Thursday (9/12). The test was carried out after Malaysia beat Laos 4-0 in the second match of Group G of the AFF Cup.

“Akhyar played well and he was our best player against Cambodia. We wish him a speedy recovery and can return to strengthening the team,” said Malaysia coach Tan Cheng Hoe, quoted from Daily news.

Meanwhile, Malaysian national team manager Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi said Akhyar Rashid and Quentin Cheng will be quarantined for 10 days. However, Mahadi hopes the two can return sooner.

“Even though they will be quarantined for 10 days, they will be tested for Covid-19 every day and if the results are negative, we will ask [ke AFF] they are back to strengthen the team,” said Mahadi.

A total of four Malaysian national team players have tested positive for Covid-19. Previously, goalkeeper Khairulazhan Khalid and winger Faisal Halim had tested positive for Covid-19.

This situation is not ideal for Malaysia. The reason is that the Malayan Tiger team will have two tough matches remaining in the AFF Cup against Vietnam (12/12) and Indonesia (19/12).

Malaysia itself is currently at the top of the AFF Cup Group B standings with a score of six points after winning 3-1 over Cambodia and 4-0 over Laos.
