Malaysia investigates one year after death of Franco-Irish teenager

From next week, a forensic pathologist will lead an investigation into the circumstances of the death last year in Malaysia of a Franco-Irish teenager whose body had been found, naked, near the tourist complex where she was staying with her family .

On August 4, 2019, Nora Quoirin, 15, disappeared from the Dusun Resort hotel, the day after her arrival.

A window had been found open in the bungalow where the family resided.

Significant means of search, including a hundred people, helicopters and sniffer dogs had been mobilized for ten days to try to find her.

The body of the teenager, suffering from a slight mental handicap, had been found, naked, in the jungle, about 2.5 km from her resort.

The autopsy concluded that she was probably dead from a hunger-induced internal bleeding after spending more than a week in the rainforest.

Malaysian police had ruled out any criminal acts and closed the case.

However, parents who live in London have always believed that the death was of criminal origin, believing that their daughter could never have left alone.

They obtained the opening of an investigation which will begin on Monday.

“We hope that all the leads surrounding the disappearance of Nora will be studied and not just the thesis still favored by the police,” her parents, Meabh and Sébastien Quoirin told AFP in a statement.

“Only us, her parents, really know what Nora was or was not capable of and so far it seems her disability has not really been taken into account,” they said.

They called the investigation, which is to last until September 4, “a determining factor in their quest for truth and justice for Nora.”

Its progress will be broadcast live on the internet.

Last week, the forensic pathologist visited the Dusun Resort hotel complex, located about sixty kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur, where the young girl had disappeared from her room on August 4, 2019, the day after her arrival.

She also went to the place where the body was found.

The teenager’s Irish mother and her French father will not be present due to restrictive measures taken to combat the coronavirus.

They will be interviewed by teleconference by the medical examiner, said their lawyer, Me Sakthyvell.

Sixty-two other witnesses are called to testify for the first time, said Me Sakthyvell, including police officers, the hikers who found the body and a British forensic expert who will be questioned by video link.

“We are determined to fight for her, always and as much as we can,” the parents said.
