The plane took off from Sydney at 13.40 local time but turned around as it passed northwestern New South Wales and landed back in Sydney at 15.47.

In a statement to Australian media, the airline said that the flight had to return because there were disturbing passengers.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said a 45-year-old man was arrested without incident and the other passengers had been evacuated from the plane.

“There is no imminent threat to the community,” they added.

“The man is expected to be charged later tonight.
