Malaria treatment and Artemisia annua plant

Question from Mr. LONGEOT Jean-François (Doubs – UC) published on 10/10/2024

Mr. Jean-François Longeot draws the attention of the Minister of Health and Access to Care to the treatment of malaria using a plant from traditional Chinese pharmacopoeia, Artemisia annua. While “natural” medicines are on the rise, the use of this plant is controversial in France. However, it is from this species that artemisinin is extracted, the active ingredient contained in the main treatments to treat malaria disease. While a debate on the effectiveness of various non-pharmaceutical products based on Artemisia such as infusions or herbal products agitates the scientific community, some believe that these plant-based treatments would have a role to play in the fight against malaria, particularly in endemic and remote areas. This plant has significant benefits for health, yet it is not recognized in France. Also, he asks him to inform him of the data acquired from science, the recommendations given by scientists for the use of this plant and if the State intends to recognize this plant in France.
