Penajam, Penasatu.com – The increasing cases of malaria in North Penajam Paser Regency (PPU) really need to be watched out for. The reason is that in June 2023, malaria cases in PPU reached 687 cases. Which resulted in PPU being included in the red zone of malaria endemic areas.

Responding to this problem, the PPU Health Service (Diskes) through the Head of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) Division Temu explained, the disease which was transmitted through the bite of the Anopheles mosquito was found not from residential areas or the forest area of the Indonesian Capital City (IKN). However, the distribution is in cross-border areas of PPU, Paser and West Kutai districts. “So this malaria case is an imported case from another region,” he explained.

He continued, the positive cases of malaria were mostly experienced by people who went in and out of the forest and they were on average not members of the PPU community, but workers and wood craftsmen who were passing through the Sotek area. “And when they get sick with malaria, they are automatically treated at the Sotek Health Center in PPU district,” he said as quoted from the PPU Diskominfo page, Friday (28/7/2013).

Temu explained again, the Government through the PPU Health Office had tried to reduce the number of malaria cases to decrease. By carrying out vector surveys, surveying mosquito breeding places, administering lavricide brackets to distributing insecticide nets to the community.

“We (PPU Health Office) also carry out routine checks with malaria screening both for workers who often go in and out of the forest, including residents who are close to endemic areas, especially in the Sotek area and workers in the IKN scope,” he said.

Meanwhile, the PPU Health Office has formed advocacy and socialization of the malaria prevention program for forest workers in PPU District. This activity aims to reduce malaria cases in PPU District by carrying out a kind of prophylaxis for wood workers/craftsmen who cross in and out of the forest.

“We have conducted outreach to several community leaders in Sotek, because we will carry out this prophylactic activity regarding the forest worker malaria control program at PPU. We are also working with WHO (World Health Organization), later we will train malaria cadres who will carry out this activity,” he concluded. (**/DiskominfoPPU)
