The Sudanese Ministry of Health recorded 13,000 cases of malaria in the city of El Fasher, North Darfur state, with the disease spreading in the state amid a “major shortage” of medicines.

Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Health in North Darfur State, Ahmed Al-Douma, explained that there is a “significant” increase in the number of people infected with malaria in El Fasher, according to what local media reported.

Al-Duma added that the large shortage of malaria medicines, the lack of support from organizations to confront epidemics, and the failure to pay workers’ benefits for a long period “exacerbated” the health situation in the state.

The Sudanese official also said that the banks’ cessation of work “prevents organizations from committing to their financial pledges to support the health sector.”

He stated that the French organization Doctors Without Borders is planning to open four centers in the city of El Fasher to treat malaria cases.

It is noteworthy that the World Health Organization has warned since the beginning of the conflict of the outbreak of malaria, dengue fever and measles in Sudan, noting that millions of children and pregnant women suffer from acute malnutrition.
