In the village of Pelelu Tepu in the Sipaliwini district there is this year a sharp increase in the number of malaria cases has been observed from September 2020. D.The Medical Mission (MZ), in collaboration with the Malaria Program of the Ministry of Health, has therefore invested an emergency krutu in the village on Friday October 2 with the village captain, basias and the rangers of the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT).
The Krutu’s intention was to discuss how to manage the malaria outbreak in the village. Director of MZ, Herman Jintie, asked the captain to find out how he can contribute to this together with the inhabitants of the village. “MZ’s policy is to prevent malaria from occurring in the interior of Suriname. The community contributes by adhering to the preventive measures and by immediately registering for screening and treatment in the event of complaints, ”said the director. The Medical Mission has placed a microscopist at the outpatient clinic for a period of 3 months, who will carry out the screening and testing on site. The treatment is done according to protocol by a Healthcare Assistant (GzA) in close consultation with the doctor.
Helene Hiwat, coordinator of the Malaria Program of the Ministry of Health says that Suriname was almost malaria-free and that the first malaria outbreak for this year at Palumeu was nipped in the bud through good cooperation with the community. “At the moment we have only fallen malaria on Pelelu Tepu and Apetina, and we also expect the same cooperation to make Pelelu Tepu malaria free,” says Hiwat. She asks the captain and the community to participate in self-protection (including sleeping under a mosquito net) and participate in the treatment of the disease.
The village captain was grateful for the national attention to the malaria situation in Tepu and promised to get the message across to the villagers. – culturu.com
