Research team from Malang State University (UM) has conducted ground-breaking research into the potential of soursop seeds as a natural alternative for the treatment of malaria. This research was conducted by students medical school Biotechnology students Anindya Zerlina Tsaqif, Khodijah, and Ryuzen, under the guidance of Dr. Kiky Martha Ariesaka, M. Biomed, and Moh. Mirza Nuryady, M.Sc from Muhammadiyah University Malang (UMM).
The results of this study show that soursop seeds contain the compound acetogenin with anti-parasitic properties that are effective against parasites that cause malaria. In addition, acetogenin also contains antioxidant properties that help reduce oxidative stress that occurs as a result of malaria.
Anindya explained that acetogenin from soursop seeds has a high potential as an alternative treatment for malaria, not only eliminating parasites but also strengthening the body through its anti-parasitic and antioxidant properties, which inhibition of the growth of plasmodium which causes malaria.
This research was supported by a grant from Malang State University through Student innovation program 2024 and supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 to improve health and well-being of all ages. It is hoped that the results of this research will be the first step in introducing the benefits of soursop seeds as a natural solution in reducing the number of malaria cases in Indonesia.
