Malaika Mihambo and Konstanze Klosterhalfen’s Performances at Diamond League Stockholm

Long jump Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo (LG Kurpfalz) narrowly missed victory at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm. In rainy conditions, the world champion confirmed her best performance of the season with 6.66 meters on Sunday, but is still looking for her top form seven weeks before the World Championships in Budapest (19th to 27th August). The young Italian Larissa Iapichino secured the victory with 6.69 meters. “I fought bravely today. I had a bad cold during the pre-season. I can still feel it. But I see that I’m on the right track,” said Mihambo on Sky.

European Champion Konstanze Klosterhalfen was also unable to prove her level of performance in the disappointing debut of the season over her parade distance of 5000 meters. The woman from Leverkusen only finished 14th in 15:13.06 minutes. Victory went to Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet (14:36.52).

“I don’t know what happened. The training went well so far, we had two really good months at altitude,” said Klosterhalfen on Sky: “We have to find out the reasons now.”

Klosterhalfen competed against the competition in early May in Doha over the 1500 meters (4:05.63 minutes) before flying back to the USA for training. Last year, the European champion ran 14:37.94 minutes in mid-June. Her best time, equivalent to the German record, from 2019 is 14:26.76 minutes.

Meanwhile, sprinter Joshua Hartmann made it onto the podium. The man from Cologne was on the starting line as a substitute in the A run over 100 meters and showed a decent performance in adverse conditions: 10.23 seconds gave him 10.23 seconds behind winner Akani Simbine (South Africa/10.03) and Reece Prescod (Great Britain/10.14 ) Third place.

One throw is enough for Kristin Pudenz

Discus thrower ristin Pudenz also finished third, despite only making one valid try in the entire competition. The Olympic silver medalist from Tokyo pushed the disc to 62.33 meters in the first round in the constant rain in Stockholm and thus remained well below her best performance of the season (66.84). Claudine Vita (Neubrandenburg/61.51) and Shanice Craft (Halle/Saale/61.01) followed in fourth and fifth place.

“I’m really happy that I hit the first throw so well. That wasn’t so easy with the rain,” said Pudenz and added with a view to the German championships next weekend in Kassel: “Of course, there is self-confidence that I can be the best German even in these conditions.”
