Shocking news from Munich: FC Bayern goalkeeper Mala Grohs has been diagnosed with a malignant tumor. The player will be absent from her team indefinitely.
Bad news rocks FC Bayern: goalkeeper Maria Luisa “Mala” Grohs is out indefinitely. The 23-year-old was diagnosed with a malignant tumor, as the club announced on Saturday morning.
Grohs explained in the club statement: “The illness is a challenge that I never thought I would have to overcome. But I am sure that with the help I am now getting from all sides, I will be able to do it again “I’ll be completely healthy.” She is in the best hands with the doctors in Munich and can rely on the support of the team and club.
Bavaria’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen emphasized that everyone was “deeply shocked” by the news of Grohs’ diagnosis. You stand behind the goalkeeper. “Mala is a great, strong personality and she will receive all the help we can give her and that she needs to get well again. We will accompany her in her healing process – she can rely on her FC Bayern,” continued Dreesen.
Sports director Max Eberl also spoke up. “It’s hard to find words with news like this. Health and life are far more important than sport,” said the 51-year-old. “Mala Grohs will now tackle her most important fight, we are by her side and wish her the necessary strength and all the best.”
The club immediately extended Grohs’ current contract in Munich. Eberl said: “With our contract extension we want to do a small part so that she can concentrate on her recovery – and show her that she should know that FC Bayern is always her home.”
Grohs moved from Bochum to Munich in 2019, where she initially played in the second team and established herself before making her debut in the first team in January 2021. She is now the undisputed goalkeeper there, has made 81 professional appearances for her club and has already won three championship titles. Grohs had also been nominated for the German national team in the past, but has so far remained unused.
