The MAK is opening its new space for contemporary art with Rosemarie Castoro, who died in 2015. Her estate is represented by Galerie Ropac.
For years, the carpets of the MAK collection floated in the gallery space next to the entrance hall, in a controversial presentation – fairytale-like, but impractical, above all it took up a lot of space. How much space can now be seen after MAK director Lilli Hollein had it carpeted and dedicated it to “the contemporary”. From now on, current positions from design, fashion, architecture and art will be presented here across all disciplines. The latter is also part of the Vienna Angewandte Museum, although one could already consider which visual arts one would like to focus on here. But you can always construct some kind of connection.
This is also the case with the conceptual New York sculptor Rosemarie Castoro (1939–2015), whose black and white work spans poetry, dance, performance and installation. Internationally, she was less well-known, especially in New York she was considered a big name, as she was the center of the Machist minimal art scene in the 1960s as the wife of the sculptor Carl Andre.
