Making Star Wars Outlaws: Exploring New and Believable Planets and Moons

There were many groans when one of the first things we saw in Star Wars Outlaws’ announcement trailer in the Xbox Games Showcase was Tatooine, because many fans are tired of the sand planet apparently being the place where everything happens in the galaxy. Fortunately, Ubisoft highlighted the brand new moon Toshara in the impressive gameplay presentation the next day. Now it’s time to learn more about how the developers at Massive intend to make these new and/or lesser-known planets and moons as interesting and believable as Tatooine and other iconic locations.

The Swedes and Lucasfilm had a Star Wars Outlaws panel at San Diego Comic-Con, and this included, among other things, the “behind the scenes” video you can watch below. The game’s “Creative Director”, Julian Gerighty, and several other developers tell and show here how important they think it is to make each area unique and fun to explore, while staying true to the Star Wars universe. This includes, among other things, having creatures adapted to these environments, varied architecture and landmarks, different cultures and factions, a nice mix of urban and rural areas and everything else that makes the virtual tourism Ubisoft and Massive are known for in The Division and Assassin’s Creed games so exceptional. We get to see concept images of some of these, and I’m guessing Toshara’s main city, Mirogana, will get a lot of attention considering it’s carved into a mountain. Gerighty talks in even more detail about this and some other thoughts and ideas at StarWars.com.

It’s no wonder that Ben and I are far from the only ones looking forward to Star Wars Outlaws. What about you?
