The Russian invasion, launched more than two months ago, has caused widespread devastation in Ukraine and forced thousands of people to flee their homeland.
What’s the controversy?
Boychenko, like the leader; Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, called the invasion and destruction of Russia a “genocide”. The mayor said there have been more than 20,000 civilian deaths in Mariupol since the war began, claiming that was more than double the killings committed by Nazi Germany.
Lavrov hit back, comparing Zelensky to Hitler. According to a transcript of his interview posted on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov said: “Zelensky put forward an argument about what kind of Nazism they could have if he himself was a Jew.”
“I could be wrong, but Hitler also had Jewish blood,” he said.
