Who has never had the bitter experience of not finding their shade of foundation or concealer after having tested dozens of different shades? And for good reason ! There are so many different skin tones…some brands offer up to 50 different shades of foundation! What if, instead, we found the make-up that adapts to us ?
What is skin pH?
Sometimes, the pH sends us back to our chemistry lessons, often, we don’t really understand much about it… As a reminder, a pH of 7 is considered pure, a pH greater than 7 is alkaline and a pH less than 7 acid. Normally, the pH of the skin of the face and body is between 4.7 and 5.75. It varies from one area of the body to another (generally the armpits and the genital area have a higher pH than that of the face) but also from one individual to another and evolves continuously during life. Slightly acidic, the skin’s pH strengthens the protective barrier by neutralizing alkaline aggressors and helps keep the skin healthy by maintaining an optimal acidic environment for the proper development of the skin’s natural flora.
Cosmetics that react and modulate according to the unique pH of our skin? We already use them almost every day! Indeed, perfumes work this way – once sprayed on the skin their formulas interact with its pH – which is worth noting that the smell of the same perfume sometimes differs from one person to another.
And it’s the same principle with makeup! Depending on the acidity specific to each epidermis, the formula evolves differently. Which explains the Color change ? A dye whose shade varies according to the pH of the skin but also the environment. Result ? Abracadabra! The cosmetic changes color !
Color-changing cosmetics
It didn’t take until the 2020s for this near-magical makeup to hit the market. Already 10 years ago a famous “magic lipstick” challenged us. Marketed by the Lipstick Queen brand, this lipstick with green grapes – and named ‘Frog Prince’ – had the particularity of changing colors on contact with the mouth to take on a pink and slightly glossy. Other brands had tried it with more or less success, the greatest successes going to Clinique’s ‘Almost Lipstick’ and Dior’s ‘Dior Addict Lip Glow’… But for the rest, the success of these products bluffing remained mixed…
A decade later, the trend is gaining momentum again and more and more brands are interested in the interactions between the skin and cosmetics, eager to fulfill our desires for tailor-made beauty. The proof, more and more beauty products promise a change in contact with the skin.
Blush Amazonian Clay Skintuitive™, Tarte
Capable of reacting and adapting to the pH of the skin, this pink blush is also adjustable when it comes to the intensity of the color! We adopt it to refresh the complexion or for a more intense sun-kissed effect and we take advantage of its long-lasting hold (thanks to the Amazonian clay).
Lip and cheek stick ‘Match Stix Color-Adaptive’, Fenty Beauty
A 2-in-1 stick to make up lips and cheeks that adapts to the pH of the skin? Rihanna did it with her cosmetics brand Fenty Beauty, the proof in video:
‘True to hue’ tinted lip and cheek balm, Florence By Mills
A modular pink tint for this stick that seems quite banal! Yet it sublimates cheeks and lips all at once… leaving a very pleasant spearmint scent. A 2-in-1 make-up marketed by the cosmetics brand of Millie Bobby Brown (alias Eleven in Stanger Things).

Lipstick ‘Ph Glow Lipstick’, Kiko Milan
The particularity of this Kiko Milano lipstick? Its ability to react on contact with the skin to give our lips the ideal pink shade to enhance them. And we are also a fan of its low price: €9.99!
Lip balm, Tom Ford
Inspired by the Private Blend Soleil Brûlant perfume, this transparent balm contains golden particles and transforms into a personalized pink shade depending on the PH of the skin.
