Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The research development of the latest Covid-19 variant, Varian Mu, has entered a new phase. The European Health Agency or EMA said that the status of this variant has the potential to be raised to the class of variant of concern (VOCs), from now on only as Variants of Interest (VOIs).
In its press statement, Friday (10/9/021), EMA said that this variant is still undergoing in-depth research. The reason is that there are many findings that call this virus more resistant to vaccines.
“Yang Mu is potentially more worrisome because of the immune-boosting potential it may exhibit,” said EMA chief vaccine strategist Marco Cavaleri. AFP.
However, Marco also admitted that currently there is no data that completes information about the variant that originally appeared in Colombia. That includes information on whether this variant is as contagious as the Delta Variant.
“However, I must say that we do not yet have data showing that the Mu variant spreads that much, and whether it will have any chance of overtaking the Delta variant as the dominant strain.”
WHO itself previously said it was conducting in-depth monitoring of the Mu variant. They even said the variant had mutations that indicated a risk of resistance to the vaccine.
“The Mu variant has a constellation of mutations that exhibit potential immune evasion properties,” the global health agency said Tuesday in its weekly pandemic bulletin.
All viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 which causes Covid-19, mutate from time to time. In this mutation, the WHO itself found several variants. In its classification, WHO distinguishes in two classes, namely Variant of Concern and Variant of Interest.
For Variant of Concern, WHO has included four variants in its classification. Those are the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta Variants. This variant is considered to have significant impact and known severity
Meanwhile in the variant of interest there are several variants included. In addition to the Mu variant, there are also Eta, Iopa, Kappa, and Lambda variants. This variant is a variant that is being monitored for its severity and impact on humans.
