With a plane traveling at 10,000 kilometers per hour, it would take more than 20 months to cover this distance. “You are looking at a 300 megapixel photo of our Sun. Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy, using a specially modified telescope, took more than 150,000 individual photos and combined them into this extraordinary image.

McCarthy used the modified Explore Scientific AR127 telescope. He used a fast capture technique to capture all the images, each 2.1 megapixel 16 bit image.

“Yesterday I took a 300 megapixel photo of the sun. This is done using a specially modified telescope. DO NOT point a regular telescope at the sun,” McCarty tweeted.

McCarthy says filters are essential for any type of Sun display. Filters and processes carried out are able to show the chromosphere layer of the Sun or the second outermost layer of the Sun.

“It took about 10 hours to stack all the data, and another 3-4 hours to get it from the raw stack to the final image,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy strongly advises against trying this kind of thing unless you know the technique properly. Because, it is very risky to look at the sun directly.

“People go blind when they try to see the Sun through telescopes. Mine is designed to wash away the intense heat generated from the Sun,” he says.
