Jakarta –
Former minister of tourism, arts and culture Malaysia, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz harvested blasphemy on social media after making sarcastic comments. He said the potential for annual flooding in Malaysia could be a ‘tourist attraction’.
As reported by StraitstimesSunday (19/6/2022) instead of sympathizing with the flood victims, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said that the country should look for opportunities by promoting “voluntourism” or voluntary tourism.
“If you know it’s coming, then start planning now. Singaporeans will come because they only spend a third of their salary, and for them, our five or six star hotels are very cheap,” Nazri said.
He commented on the annual flooding in Kuala Krai, Kelantan. According to him, the flood was like a festival.
“Flooding is like a festival. Every rainy season, we have a flood festival, and people will come,” he said.
“Because now there is voluntourism, where foreigners come to do volunteer work and they pay (to buy tickets and so on),” he added.
