Majority of vaccinated believe that people without vaccination can be refused entry in public places

Once all adults have had the chance to get their corona shots, only fully vaccinated people will be allowed access to certain public places, such as cafes and festivals. That’s what six out of ten (62 percent) vaccinated think.

EenVandaag conducted a survey among 15,000 members of the EenVandaag Opinion Panel. Of the participants, 83 percent have already been vaccinated or plan to do so. 14 percent certainly or probably do not want to be vaccinated. They are almost without exception (98 percent) against restricting the access of unvaccinated people.

Irresponsible

In the Netherlands there is no compulsory vaccination, but you can also go to events or on holiday with a negative test or proof that you have had corona. Now that the delta variant is leading to many infections, there is a debate about whether full vaccination should be mandatory for access to non-essential venues. This is already the case in France.

Vaccinated people see this. They believe that people who do not want to be vaccinated are not taking responsibility for containing the pandemic and leaving others to pay for the consequences. Someone says: “A new wave is coming and everyone will be the victims again. Especially the healthcare staff. And soon I will definitely have to go into lockdown again for these kinds of people?”

Not vaccinating is not without obligation

Two thirds (66 percent) of the vaccinated people surveyed think it is downright selfish not to get vaccinated. They only understand people with a medical reason. Someone writes: “They assume that others will get vaccinated, and take the risks of side effects, nice and easy.”

Many participants believe that unvaccinated people should bear the consequences of their choice. “I’m fine if you don’t want to be vaccinated, but that’s not without obligation,” says one interviewee. Another: “You should not complain if you are not allowed to enter somewhere. Then they should organize a festival themselves where only unvaccinated people are allowed.”

Discrimination

Respondents who chose not to be vaccinated called it discrimination if they were denied access to public places. They are afraid of side effects and are often critical of the government. They call it a right to dispose of their own body. According to them, others should respect their choice and be treated equally: “I am against because this is a very skewed society. That I have to ask my vaccinated mother-in-law to go to a store for me, or that I don’t go out with my family food can go.”

Moreover, they don’t think the difference with vaccinated people is that big because they could also pass on the virus. An unvaccinated participant says: “Discrimination at its best. Vaccinated people can still be contagious and transmit the virus. Totally absurd to give vaccinated freedom and the unvaccinated not.”

Cafés for vaccinated people, shops for everyone

Which places should eventually only be accessible to vaccinated people and which not? The majority of all survey participants believe this should apply to cafes (56 percent), festivals (61 percent), football matches (59 percent), discos and nightclubs (64 percent) and flying abroad (58 percent). This mainly concerns places where it would be difficult to keep your distance.

The respondents are divided about restaurants: 51 percent are against this and 42 percent against. And shops must remain accessible to everyone. Only a quarter (26 percent) believe that unvaccinated people should be refused there. Shops actually find them necessary for everyone, and keeping your distance is not really a problem there.
