Majority of the House of Representatives demands higher salary in healthcare, profit tax up

There has been a heated discussion in the House of Representatives about the payment of healthcare staff for some time. The workload is already high and has only increased since the corona crisis. A bonus was given during the pandemic, but this is not a structural increase in salary.

Opposition party SP has now got the ruling party ChristenUnie on its side and together they came up with this plan during the corona debate. “Recently 80 billion euros in government support has gone to large companies and that has helped to keep companies afloat and many jobs,” said CU Member of Parliament Bikker. “Now we have to look the other way.”

“Last year we applauded en masse for the healthcare providers who led the way in combating the coronavirus. But there is still not enough room for wages in healthcare,” says Marijnissen. “While the workload in healthcare is increasing.”

In the debate, both Prime Minister Rutte and Minister De Jonge emphasized that they do not see anything in a structural salary increase. According to Rutte, their salary has been increased for several years and a caretaker cabinet should not take such decisions.

Tomorrow the Council of Ministers will consider the new wishes of the House of Representatives.
