Majority of the city council: ‘Make Keti Koti a nationally recognized holiday’

Keti Koti should become a nationally recognized public holiday, according to council member Nenita La Rose (PvdA). Her proposal is supported by a majority of the city council. As far as she is concerned, there should be an investigation into whether July 1 can in any case become a day off for Amsterdam municipal officials.

General Recognized Holiday

According to La Rose, this commemoration should actually be “a day of solidarity.” “A day on which we jointly recognize the past and celebrate the equal future.”

The councilor therefore wants to ask the government to make Keti Koti a General Recognized Holiday, according to her proposal. Just like King’s Day and Liberation Day.

In addition, she would like to investigate whether July 1 can become a day off for Amsterdam municipal officials. To this end, discussions are held with the unions and the works council.

“Time for the next step”

According to the councilor, the proposal to make July 1 a recognized holiday is not only widely supported in the city council, but also throughout the city.

“Something is brewing in society,” said La Rose. “The movement that demands recognition and equality has accelerated in recent months and has never been stronger.”

Get Koti live

AT5 is broadcasting live today the celebration of the abolition of slavery from 1:00 PM. That will look different from previous years due to the measures surrounding the corona virus. “The most important adjustment is that we cannot receive an audience this year,” says Linda Nooitmeer, chairman of NiNsee.

The program, however, remains the same. ‘This means that Minister of Education, Culture and Science Ingrid van Engelshoven is present, that Mayor Halsema is also present. They will both speak, just like me. ” In addition, wreaths will be laid.
