Majority of teenagers want a corona shot

A majority of young people aged 12 to 17, 72 percent, want to be vaccinated against corona. That is what the RIVM says on the basis of its own research. “The reasons for this are similar to those in adults: wanting to protect one’s own health, to protect others and to get rid of measures.”

From 16 to 20 June, RIVM conducted a measurement among nearly 50,000 people for the thirteenth time. Young people who doubt whether they will get vaccinated are just like adults concerned about short- and long-term side effects, according to the results of the study. Of the participating parents, 69 percent say they are (probably) in favor of their child’s vaccination.

After a positive advice from the Health Council, the cabinet decided on Wednesday to also offer healthy young people aged 12 to 17 years. Vulnerable young people of these ages have already been sent an invitation. The willingness to vaccinate among all age groups is still increasing, according to the RIVM.

Coronaregels

On the other hand, compliance with the remaining corona measures is decreasing, RIVM sees from the results. Social contacts and crowds are increasing and people are less likely to adhere to the 1.5 meter distance. For catering visits, for example, this dropped from 71 to 52 percent compared to the last measurement in May. People are also less often tested if they have complaints: this percentage went from 66 to 52 percent.

“However, it remains important to get tested and to stay at home in case of complaints, because by no means everyone who wants that has been (fully) vaccinated. In addition, the more contagious Delta variant is advancing,” RIVM emphasizes.

Holidays

A third of those surveyed say they go on holiday abroad. Testing and quarantine after foreign visits to high-risk countries are not very popular. People do that for 22 and 24 percent respectively.

Since the spring of 2020, the RIVM, GGD GHOR Nederland and the regional GGDs have been jointly conducting a recurring survey into people’s behaviour, what they think of the measures and how they are doing. “Now that the infections have been decreasing recently and various measures have been lifted, the increase in well-being is continuing, especially among young people and young adults. There is also an increase in confidence in the government’s approach to corona,” RIVM continues.
