More than half of Germans are of the opinion that not worth working for according to a study cited by Reuters. This conclusion was made after the government announced increases in social benefits and child benefits.
The government said it was increasing these payments to help people cope with high inflation, but also stressed it did not want to encourage people to give up work altogether, BTA reported.
From the beginning of next year, social security payments per person in a single-member household in Germany will rise to 563 euros per month from the current 502 euros. These payments benefit the country’s 5.5 million unemployed, with the state covering their rent and health insurance.
The increase in social benefits has been coupled with a significant increase in child benefits for low-income families. From the beginning of 2025, the child allowance for the first child becomes 636 euros, and for each subsequent child – 530 euros. Until now, this amount was 250 euros for each child.
A survey conducted by the agency INSA (INSA) and published in the daily “Bild” shows that 52% of Germans think that it is better to live on social benefits than to work for minimum wage. In Germany, the minimum wage is 12.4 euros per hour or 1450 euros per month.
Germans are also divided on whether raising welfare benefits is right. 45% approve of the move, while 44% oppose it.
Finance Minister Christian Lindner said last week that increases in social benefits and child benefits should not encourage people to give up work. He stated, “The best way to deal with poverty is through work.”
