More than half of Germans know that they don’t exercise enough. This is shown by a current Forsa survey commissioned by the AOK federal association. The most common problem is that there is not enough time for exercise in everyday life – or there is a lack of motivation.
“More than half of the population – 54 percent in total – are aware that they don’t get enough exercise. However, for many people there are problems with implementation,” explains Jens Martin Hoyer, deputy chairman of the AOK federal association. 42 percent of the German population has already experienced that a lack of exercise has consequences for their own health: those surveyed attribute their own health problems to a lack of exercise and sitting for long periods of time.
But what is stopping Germans from moving more? One in two (49 percent) cited a lack of time in everyday life and a lack of desire and motivation to exercise (47 percent) as the reasons for this. “We are a nation of extreme sitters – even at work. This situation should worry us,” says Hoyer. According to the survey, the majority of employed people (61 percent) work sitting for more than four hours on a working day. On a normal weekday, almost half of those in employment (43 percent) sit for at least four hours before or after work.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends getting at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week. Moderate exercise means, for example, fast walking or normal cycling, i.e. exercise in which the heart rate increases slightly and you sweat easily. Intensely strenuous exercise includes, for example, fast jogging or cycling – you get very out of breath and sweat profusely.
