A majority in the House of Representatives wants Lelystad Airport to no longer open to commercial aviation. A proposal to this effect from the Party for the Animals received a majority this afternoon. GroenLinks-PvdA, NSC, D66, BBB, CDA, SP, ChristenUnie and Volt supported the motion calling on the cabinet to come up with a plan to no longer open Lelystad Airport to commercial flights.

Parties believe that it is no longer responsible to start civil aviation at that location due to, among other things, the climate, public health and the scarce so-called nitrogen space.

Only VVD and PVV are outspoken in favor

Lately it has increasingly looked as if there would no longer be a majority to open Lelystad Airport. In the parties’ election manifestos, only VVD and PVV were outright in favor of opening the airport.

Almost all election manifestos stated that the airport cannot open to passenger flights. According to the municipality and entrepreneurs in the area, this has economic consequences. In recent years, more than 200 million euros have been invested in preparing Lelystad Airport for commercial aviation.

The motion from the Party for the Animals also calls on the cabinet to develop alternative plans for “a social investment” in the region in consultation with local authorities and residents.
