Riyadh: Serious traffic violations in Saudi Arabia will now be registered as criminal offenses. The Saudi traffic department and the public prosecution have reached an agreement in this regard. Serious offenses include intentional traffic accidents and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.
The understanding is to hand over serious traffic cases directly to the public prosecution. The agreement was signed between Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasir Al Mukhbil, Assistant Under Secretary for Public Prosecution, and Maj. Gen. Mohammed Al Bassami, head of the Saudi Traffic Directorate.
The main provision of the agreement is the transfer of cases related to traffic offenses. Accidents resulting in death or mutilation due to driver’s fall and violation of the law, failure to stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident, failure to notify the traffic department of the accident, replacement of the driver who caused the accident, failure to provide possible assistance to the injured, and intentional causing an accident are both categories of cases.
The public prosecution will also go to the spot, collect preliminary evidence and register the case. The prosecution will lead the follow-up.
