Parts of two neighborhoods in Sofia have limited traffic due to the construction of the metro. Traffic is stopped on key boulevards and streets in “Geo Milev” and “Slatina”.
“The repair works are expected to last about two and a half years, during which three sections will be closed – at the intersection with Sitnyakovo Blvd., the other at the intersection with Nikolay Kopernik St., the third – the intersection with Slatinska St. “. Inner-quarter streets will be used as detour routes,” stated the pre BNT head of the “Investment Activity” department at “Metropolitan” EAD Svetoslav Statev.
Residents of the neighborhood fear that there will be major traffic jams in the neighborhoods, and bypass routes will not be able to accommodate the large passenger flow.
Svetoslav Statev explained that among the measures that can be taken is redirection to alternative detour routes.
“There is always heavy traffic in this place, but I think people have already got their bearings. We have run a long campaign to inform citizens about what is coming and how everything will be organized. The whole organization of traffic and parking in the area needs to be reconsidered.” commented the mayor of “Slatina” district Georgi Iliev.
From January 6, for a period of 2.5 years, the local lane of “Tsarigradsko shose” between the OMV gas station and McDonald’s is also closed. This is necessary because there is the underground site from which the tunnel boring machine will be imported and assembled.
“This will take about 8 months. The machine itself weighs 1,600 tons and is about 86 meters long. For comparison, it is almost as long as an ocean liner and weighs almost as much as 3 airplanes. The head of the machine alone is 9.4 meters in diameter. This is approximately the width of the tunnel in which the metro trains run, which we ride every day in the metro,” explained the mayor of Sofia, Vasil Terziev.
