More than 139,000 customers in Indiana were left without power on Friday morning following a storm system with high winds that swept through the state the previous afternoon. The storms hit Indianapolis around 4 p.m. on Thursday, causing downed power lines and leading to the rescheduling of various events, including a Savannah Bananas game at Victory Field.
As of 10:20 a.m., AES Indiana reported 43,864 customers without power, while Duke Energy had 89,859 customers without power. During the peak of the outages caused by Thursday’s storms, AES Indiana had 81,000 customers without power, and Duke Energy saw 202,000 customers without power.
AES Indiana stated that power restoration could take several days and advised customers to have plans in place for an extended period without power. The company explained that it is often difficult to provide accurate estimates until all incidents have been assessed and crews have been assigned. AES has brought in additional resources from out of state to assist in restoring power across Indiana.
Duke Energy is also bringing in extra personnel from Ohio, Kentucky, and the Carolinas to restore power to their customers. The company emphasized that their priority is to restore service as quickly and safely as possible, but extended outages are possible in the hardest-hit areas.

In response to downed traffic signals or tree limbs blocking roads, the Indy DPW has deployed three dozen team members to clear limbs from the right-of-way and assess stop lights. If encountering a downed traffic signal or a limb blocking a roadway, residents can contact the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622 or submit a report online at RequestIndy.gov.
Indy Parks Family Centers will serve as cooling locations on Friday and Saturday. However, Christian Park Family Center will not be open on Saturday, and Rhodius Park Family Center will be closed on Friday and Saturday. Other family centers will be available as cooling centers during their normal business hours, as long as they have power.
