Major Snowfall Expected in NYC Next Week, Coinciding with Valentine’s Day

Although snow has been scarce in New York and the tri-state area for the second year in a row, the remainder of the winter may reverse the situation.

Today and into tomorrow the temperature is shaping up to be above average, but meteorologists are tracking a system of winter storms that could bring a substantial snowfall to NYC on Tuesday and maybe again on Friday next week, coinciding with the publicized celebration of Valentine’s Day.

“We are monitoring the possibility of Major snowfall in northeastern US next week as a weather system moves from the Midwest toward the East Coast Tuesday morning. “There is still a lot of uncertainty about the type and amount of precipitation,” commented today the National Metereological Service.

Central Park, considered the reference thermometer New York City has recorded just 2.3 inches of snow this winter, but meteorologist Nick Gregory of Fox News believes the area has the potential to receive at least another 15 inches this month, according to its mid-winter forecast.

A low pressure system is forecast to move northeast and slide over the Atlantic Ocean early Tuesday. Meanwhile, colder air will be blown in from Canada, which will reduce temperatures near or below the freezing point (32F/OC) as of Monday night.

Everything related to nature is unpredictable, but for now Sunday is expected to be cloudy and there is a forecast of 40% rainfall on Monday, 70% on Tuesday and 40% again on Friday. The storm may start as rain in some areas along the Atlantic coast on Monday night, but as it strengthens it will be able to continually take advantage of the colder air, ensuring a change to snow.

NYC had two snowfalls in mid-January, after almost two years (701 days) without any in the city, and then an extreme cold wave arrived.

The previous record for New York City without significant snowfall had been 400 days, which ended on March 21, 1998. Central Park typically has about 24 inches of total snow during a winter. But last year it totaled only 2.3, the lowest amount since records began in 1869.

In general Snowfall has been scarce in New York City in the last five years, with the exception of the winter of 2020-21, when almost 40 inches fell, exceeding the annual average. Doctors and meteorologists remember that Extreme temperatures are very dangerous, especially for the elderly and children..
