Supply problems at two manufacturers of the rabies vaccine lead to a major shortage of the rabies vaccine. One producer may not be able to deliver vaccines until January 2024, the GGD reports. The other producer cannot meet the increased demand caused by the production problem.
The vaccine that is still available will be reserved for people who have had an incident during their trip and need to receive or complete follow-up treatment.
The GGD advises travelers who still have to complete a series of vaccinations to contact them to see if this is still possible.
Minimize risk
The GGD says that people can do a lot themselves to limit the risk of rabies. The health organization advises avoiding contact with live and dead animals.
Dogs, but also cats, monkeys and bats can transmit the virus if they scratch, bite or lick you. If that happens, the GGD advises to clean the wound thoroughly with soap, Betadine or alcohol. Even if you have been vaccinated, the GGD recommends that you immediately call the emergency center of your own health insurance company.
According to the GGD, about 60,000 people worldwide die of rabies every year. The virus does not occur among animals in the Netherlands.
