Major Renovation on A7 Bridge Near Purmerend to Cause Traffic Chaos for Six Months

The bridge over the Neckerstraat on the A7 near Purmerend will be radically renovated for six months: heavy traffic will be diverted, only half the lanes will be available for a large part of the time and entrance and exit ramps will be closed. The work lasts six months, from April 5 to early September.

It is mainly the section between Zaandam and Purmerend that has to deal with blockages, traffic jams and delays. Delays of an hour or more cannot be ruled out. Rijkswaterstaat calls on people to travel together, work from home, take public transport (or bicycle) or travel outside rush hour, but the expectation remains that not everyone will do so – resulting in traffic chaos.

Alternative routes are hardly available, according to Rijkswaterstaat, although it is feared that the route via the N244 (Purmerend – West-Graftdijk) and N246 via Wormerveer to the A8 will be ‘considerably busier’. Heavy freight traffic (over 25 tons) must in any case take this route (30-ton vehicles must take this route from 2022).

Marianne Doeves – de Boer (Lokaal Zaans) and Natasja Cornelisse (PVV) fear that the A9 will also be used as a shortcut. They have submitted a motion to monitor cut-through traffic through Zaanstad and to anticipate possible entry bans such as those that have also been introduced in villages around Purmerend. They mention the Communicatieweg in Assendelft, the N203 in Krommenie and N246 near Wormerveer as suggestions. What this will look like in practice is not explained in the motion
