This Wednesday, October 11, in the evening, several towns in the Alpes-Maritimes and Var departments were plunged into darkness after a major power outage. The situation was completely restored around 10:30 p.m.
The departments of Var and Alpes-Maritimes suffered a major power outage this Wednesday, October 11, early in the evening. France 3 Côte d’Azur takes stock of what we know.
Several cities affected
Yesterday evening from 7:50 p.m., several towns in these two departments such as Saint-Raphaël, Brignoles, Hyères in the Var or Nice, Menton, Antibes, Cannes, Cagnes-sur-Mer and Golfe Juan in the Alpes-Maritimes were plunged into black. According to the network manager RTE, “260,000 customers were affected at the peak of the outage”.
The lighting of individuals, but also that of municipalities and private individuals, has also been impacted. Neighborhoods were completely plunged into darkness as shown in this video produced by France 3 Côte d’Azur in Cannes:

Traffic lights also went out, with roads lit only by car headlights.
In Cannes, due to lack of lighting, a match RC Cannes Volley-Ball was interrupted in the Palace of Victories. He resumed several tens of minutes later.
An incident on the Néoules electrical substation
According to RTE, the origin comes from ” of a technical incident on the Néoules electrical substation, which is quite important as it serves the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes. This incident caused an overload effect on the lines“.
“This is not a blackout. Load shedding was carried out by our agents to avoid this overload. Cuts were therefore carried out under control, so as not to impact important sites such as hospitals”, adds RTE. This explains why not all households in the affected towns were impacted in the same way.
A cut which ended around 10:20 p.m.
The power outage lasted about two hours. “ Our dispatch agents intervened very quickly, other alternative routes were put in place to serve the various households. These routes are still in use today pending resolution of the problem.”specified RTE.
The return to service began around 8:20 p.m. and the situation returned to normal. According to the network manager, this type of incident involving the implementation of load shedding is rather rare. The exact causes of the technical incident at the Néoules substation are not yet known.
Teams are on site to resolve the problem.
