A major power failure has almost completely halted train traffic to and from Rotterdam Central. The station is virtually inaccessible by train. The NS expects the malfunction until at least 3 p.m is going to last.

“The malfunction is in the electronic security system,” says Martijn de Graaf of ProRail Rijnmond. “We need that system to allow the trains to run safely, so as soon as there is a malfunction, a train is not allowed to run.”

The outage started around 10.45 am this morning and has consequences for almost all trains that run to and from Rotterdam Central. According to NS As a result of the disruption, passengers at the stations of Amsterdam, Schiphol, Breda, Breukelen and all stations in between will not be able to continue their journey to Rotterdam.

Previous failure

The major outage was preceded by a shorter power outage this morning just after the morning rush hour. At that time, no trains ran between Rotterdam Central and Gouda, Schiedam Center and Schiphol Airport. The malfunction was resolved around 09:30.

The first malfunction jumped out spontaneously, so it went out by itself, says De Graaf, but a little later it went wrong again. “That was annoying, because in order to solve a malfunction, you have to know what the malfunction is.”

Initially, the Dutch Railways predicted that train traffic to and from Rotterdam Central would resume around 1 p.m., but that time has been pushed back by two hours.
