Major Maintenance Causes Closure of Vlaketunnel in Zeeland

The Vlaketunnel in Zeeland will be closed to all traffic until Monday morning. Rijkswaterstaat is carrying out major maintenance on the tunnel on the A58 between Bergen op Zoom and Goes.

Rijkswaterstaat warns of serious traffic disruption and extra travel time that can amount to more than an hour. For example, people who can work from home or postpone their travel are advised to do so.

Traffic between Rotterdam and the Middelburg/Vlissingen region will be diverted via the N57 over the Brouwersdam and the Oosterscheldekering. Travelers to and from Brabant can drive via Zierikzee and Burgh-Haamstede. For some people it may also be faster to get to their destination via the Western Scheldt Tunnel and Belgium.

“We deliberately chose this period to carry out the work,” says Rijkswaterstaat spokesperson Eric Eussen at Omroep Zeeland. “There is now much less holiday traffic than in the summer months.”

The Vlaketunnel was built in the 1970s and runs under the Canal through South Beveland. According to Rijkswaterstaat, an average of 55,000 vehicles drive through the tunnel per day.

Part of the tunnel’s technical installation will be replaced until Monday morning. This includes camera systems, public address systems and operating systems.

If everything goes according to plan, the tunnel will reopen at 5 a.m. on Monday.
