Major League Baseball trade deadline ends in a hurry

The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired starter Jack Flaherty, San Diego added All-Star closer Tanner Scott and Arizona, Baltimore and Pittsburgh all made significant trades before Tuesday’s trade deadline.

Many of the top stars mentioned as targets during this trade period stayed with their teams, including Toronto slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr., San Francisco left-hander Blake Snell and Chicago White Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet.

San Diego received Scott from Miami, Cleveland acquired right-hander Alex Cobb from San Francisco and Minnesota gained reliever Trevor Richards in a pay-cut decision from Toronto, which also sent outfielder Kevin Kiermaier to the Dodgers and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to Pittsburgh.

The Pirates, who are in the NL wild-card race, added outfielder Bryan de la Cruz from Miami in exchange for two prospects. De la Cruz led the Marlins with 18 homers.

The Orioles acquired starter Trevor Rogers and sent prospect Connor Norby and outfielder Kule Stowers to the Marlins. Rogers, 26, has been a reliable option for Miami most of the season with a 4.53 ERA in 21 starts. Baltimore also added outfielder Eloy Jimenez from the White Sox and reliever Gregory Soto from the Phillies.

Arizona filled a hole in its lineup by adding first baseman Josh Bell, who hit .239 with 14 homers for the Marlins this season. Arizona needed a power bat after Christian Walker left Monday’s game with a strained left oblique muscle.

Arizona also acquired right-hander Dylan Floro from Washington for Triple-A infielder Andres Chaparro.

The Dodgers acquired Flaherty from Detroit for minor league catcher Thayron Liranzo and infielder Trey Sweeney.

Scott gives the Padres one of the best closers around with a 1.18 ERA, 18 saves and 53 strikeouts in 44 appearances. The Padres also added left-hander Martin Perez from the Pirates for a prospect.

The Guardians are hoping Cobb, 36, a 2023 All-Star, can give them a boost over the next two months despite not pitching this year because of hip surgery.

The Mets received starter Paul Blackburn from Oakland for minor leaguer Kade Morris.

The Mets added Dominican reliever Huascar Brazoban from the Marlins and right-hander Tyler Zuber from the Rays. Pittsburgh received Kiner-Falefa in exchange for Charles McAdoo from the minor leagues.

The Pirates also added left-hander Josh Walker from the Mets for minor league lefty Nicolas Carreno. Kansas City received right-hander Lugas Erceg from Oakland for right-hander Willi Klein.

Philadelphia now has left-hander Tanner Banks in exchange for a minor leaguer from the White Sox.

Seattle, which is fighting for the AL West lead, received right-hander JT Chargois from Miami for minor league right-hander Will Schomberg.

Boston acquired right-hander Lucas Sims from the Reds, while the Yankees acquired right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. from the Cubs.

Sims, 30, has a 3.57 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings over 43 appearances. He has made 210 appearances for the Reds, compiling a 3.94 ERA since 2018.

The Reds received a 19-year-old prospect, right-hander Ovis Portes.

Leiter, 33, has a 4.21 ERA in 39 appearances this season. The Cubs received minor leaguers Ben Cowles and Jack Neely.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have added left-hander Josh Walker from the New York Mets in exchange for minor league left-hander Nicolas Carreno.

Walker made 24 appearances for the Mets over the past two seasons.

Reigning World Series champion Texas, third in its division, received left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin from Detroit for two minor leaguers.

St. Louis added right-handed reliever Shawn Armstrong from Tampa Bay in exchange for outfielder Dylan Carlson and cash. The Angels now have right-hander Mike Baumann from San Francisco.

The activity followed a dizzying Monday.

Among the major transactions completed on Tuesday, the Cardinals acquired right-hander Erick Fedde in a three-club trade that sent Michael Kopech and Tommy Eldman to the Dodgers.

The Brewers added Dominican starter Frankie Montás and the Astros acquired left-hander Yusei Kikuchi for a high price. The Braves reunited with Cuban slugger Jorge Soler, the 2021 World Series MVP.
