A landslide of 250 meters is splitting Italy’s railways in two: the landslide that occurred on Tuesday 12 March between Ariano Irpino and Montecalvoin the province of Avellino, has in fact caused it stop the movement of trains between Foggia and Benevento. And the section that connects the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic sides at the border between Campania and Puglia will remain closed for a month. On Friday 15 March alone, 24 Frecciarossa trains underwent route changes or cancellations of the entire route.
Tuesday, after the landslide, it was
traffic suspended of high speed and Intercity trains on the route between Benevento and Foggia. On Wednesday evening RFI announced that the technical investigations had highlighted some
damage to one of the ventilation shafts of the Starza tunnel and a localized failure of the work. The urgent works include the removal of debris present on the tracks, the ventilation shaft will also be demolished and rebuilt and the damaged structural part of the tunnel will be restored.
They will be then
necessary monitoring geological studies of the area affected by the landslide and structural investigations of the tunnel. The forecasts for the restoration of the railway line are
estimated at 30 days, during which the high-speed and Intercity trains will stop at the Benevento and Foggia stations, and between the two stations there is a
replacement service with buses.
A situation that is, however, provoking
many inconveniences: in addition to cancellations and delays of High Speed and Intercity trains, the bus route (in addition to the waiting time for the vehicles) significantly lengthens the travel time. And for those who had planned the
Easter holidays on the train the risk is to find yourself stuck between the two stations.
And in the meantime, precisely because of the imminent Easter holidays, the Corriere del Mezzogiorno also reports the impossibility of purchasing train tickets for alternative routes, as they are already
all sold out, while those of airplanes are skyrocketing. And therefore for commuters and for those who, for the holidays, had decided to move between Puglia and Campania there is a risk
severe inconveniences.
