Frozen Fruit Recall Affects Major Retailers Nationwide
U.S. food safety watchdogs are urging consumers to check their freezers following a major frozen fruit recall that is affecting some of the largest retailers nationwide. Walmart, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Target, Aldi, and Associated Wholesale Grocers are among the retailers impacted by the recall.
The recall was initiated by Sunrise Growers Inc., a subsidiary of SunOpta Inc., on June 21. The company issued a voluntary recall of specific frozen fruit products, including fruit medleys, pineapple chunks, strawberries, blackberries, cherries, and mangoes. The recall was prompted by concerns that the frozen fruit may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. However, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled products at this time.
The frozen fruit products were distributed to various states across the United States. Walmart sold the affected products in multiple states, including Arkansas, California, Texas, and more. Whole Foods distributed the recalled items to select stores nationwide, while Trader Joe’s sold the affected product in several states, including New York, Texas, and Florida. Target, Aldi, and Associated Wholesale Grocers also carried the recalled frozen fruit.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are advised to check their freezers and either discard the items or return them to the store for a full refund. It is important to note that Sunrise Growers Inc. is not currently facing any legal action related to the recall.
This is not the first time that concerns over listeria contamination have led to a recall of fruit products. In 2022, multiple brands of fresh cut fruit, vegetables, and dips were recalled in New York and surrounding states due to potential listeria contamination.
