Major floods in a high school in Montluçon: lessons suspended this Monday

A large pipe of the Madame-de-Staël high school, in Montluçon (Allier), broke this Sunday January 8 in the afternoon. The day school building where the classrooms are located was flooded. Consequently, all lessons are suspended on Monday 9 January. At least.

Facts

It was the sensor of an elevator on the first floor of the building, near the toilets where the accident took place, which was activated on contact with water. The alert was therefore triggered around 4pm on Sunday.

The water spread all over the floor and then flooded the classrooms. The ground floor was also affected, at the level of the courtyard and the canteen. The causes of this pipe rupture were not yet known this Sunday evening.

The operations

The school management, the city’s technical teams and the Montluçon fire brigade went to the scene. Under the command of Lieutenant Olivier Bollet, they first cut the electricity and carried out a reconnaissance to assess the extent of the damage. Then they started the depletion operations, using in particular two machines, as well as means of suction and lighting. No injuries are reported. City officials are helping emergency services resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

The damage is only material.

The results

The Region, responsible for high schools, and the Clermont-Ferrand academy were in turn contacted. And the decision has therefore been made to suspend classes at least this Monday January 9, or even more if necessary, depending on cleaning and any repairs to be scheduled.

The approximately 1,050 students of the Madame-de-Staël high school, who come from the commune of Montluçonnais but also from neighboring towns and departments, have all been informed via their digital workplace (ENT). However, the establishment is not closed for interns. Some were also present this Sunday at the time of the events. But since the college is located away from the damaged building, it can remain open.
