A major fire has been raging in a thrift store and clothing store in Almere since last night. A lot of smoke was released, which mainly spread over the Oostvaardersplassen.
The fire in the Almere Buiten district started around 9 p.m. and the fire brigade quickly scaled up. Units from Almere, Lelystad and Dronten, among others, are helping to extinguish the fire. Water transport trucks have been used to ensure a constant supply of water. Part of the industrial estate where the fire is raging is inaccessible due to extinguishing efforts.
Due to the smoke development, an NL Alert was issued in the area at 11:40 p.m. On the other side of a road that runs along the site is a residential area. People were warned to stay away from smoke, close windows and doors and turn off ventilation in their homes.
According to Broadcasting Flevoland the entire building, which housed several companies, was destroyed. At around 2 a.m. the fire was still not fully under control. The fire brigade is trying to prevent the fire from spreading to an adjacent building. Extinguishing has now started. Although the NL Alert has been withdrawn, local residents are still advised to keep doors and windows closed.
