A fierce wildfire is raging on Table Mountain in South Africa. The fire started on Sunday morning and has now reached the University of Cape Town. Part of it has been reduced to ashes, including a library with rare books on heritage and (African) history. Students have been asked to leave the campus.
A restaurant has also gone up in flames. A firefighter sustained burns and was taken to hospital.
The smoke from the fire can be seen far and wide. However, residents of the adjacent Rondebosch district do not have to leave their homes yet.
The fire is fought with extinguishing helicopters that drop large amounts of water on the flames. The strong wind makes extinguishing more difficult, according to the fire brigade.
Table Mountain is a mountain with a distinctive flat top. It towers over Cape Town and is an important tourist attraction, partly because of the view over the city and the ocean.
