In a warehouse at the Milieustraat on the Greunsweg in Leeuwarden, a major fire has been raging since 10 p.m. The fire brigade is present with several corps to fight the fire. An NL alert has also been issued for the immediate vicinity.
The first fire alarm came in around 10 p.m. The fire brigade from the main post at Aldlânsdyk and those from Bilgaard went to the fire location. Soon afterwards, the corps in Burgum, Marsum and Stiens were called in for help. Around 10.10 pm the scale was scaled up to ‘very large fire’, because the fire had spread. Then there were calls to the forces of Drachten and Grou and then to Harlingen.
Shed full of paper
The fire rages in a shed measuring fifty by a hundred meters that, according to the fire brigade, was full of paper. The fire brigade uses several fire-fighting vehicles and two aerial platforms to fight the fire. A water transport has also been built on the site to ensure sufficient extinguishing water.
Omrin employees have removed some containers that were close to the shed to give the fire brigade more space.
According to the fire brigade, no one was injured. “There was one person present at the time of the fire. But it was not in the shed, ” says spokesman Baukje de Wal of the Safety Region Fryslân.

NL-alert
The fire is accompanied by a lot of smoke, which is why an NL alert was issued around 11 p.m. People in the area who are bothered by the smoke would be wise to keep their windows and doors closed. “The weather is fairly calm, which is why the smoke spreads easily,” says De Wal.
At 11:11 pm the GRIP 1 signal followed: this is an upscaling intended to coordinate the deployment of a large number of emergency services as well as possible. At 11:44 pm, the Bolsward fire brigade was also called in to deliver additional material.
Fire hard to reach
According to De Wal, the firefighting activities will probably take up a large part of the night. The fire is difficult for the firefighters to reach. An attempt is made to make a hole in the wall to get better access to the fire. “There are many steel structures in the building. This makes it difficult for the fire to circulate. There is therefore more smoke than fire to be seen from outside. But that also makes the fire difficult to reach, ” said De Wal.
